The Gin and Tonic is one of those drinks that I all but forget about over the winter. They’re one of my favorites, and are no doubt a classic, but I don’t tend to crave them until the weather starts heating up. And when that happens- I want the drink to be as refreshing as possible. Lately, I’ve been loving the addition of St Germain for some floral notes, and muddled cucumber, which make this Cucumber Elderflower Gin & Tonic quite possibly the perfect summer cocktail.
St Germain is not a cheap booze to buy, but a bottle should last you a long time. Plus, there’s the added benefit of it making nearly every drink more delicious.
Cucumber-Elderflower Gin & Tonic
makes: 1 cocktail
2 1/2-inch thick slices cucumber, plus ribbons for garnish
1 tablespoon lime juice, plus a wedge for garnish
1 tablespoon St Germain elderflower liquer
1 1/2 ounces gin (Hendricks, St George, Bombay Sapphire or your favorite)
4 ounces (about) tonic water (use a good one like Fevertree)
- In a cocktail shaker, muddle the cucumber with the lime juice until it is well smooshed.
- Add the St Germain, gin, and a handful of ice. Shake for 30 seconds of so.
- Fill a highball glass with ice (I’m partial to crushed ice for this) and strain in the gin mixture. Top off with tonic water. Garnish with a cucumber ribbon or two and a lime wedge.
