In one week from today, we will be en route to Costa Rica to celebrate the marriage of my little brother Elijah and my soon-to-be sister in law, Kasia. I couldn’t be happier for them, and think they did a smashing job choosing the location for their wedding.
I have been asked to do two jobs for this wedding: Be the Master of Ceremonies (aka telling people to STFU when necessary), and helping to create the specialty cocktails. (aka getting people good and knackered) In other words, the two most ideal jobs for me that have ever existed.
Elijah loves bourbon, and asked that it was one of the main ingredients in one of the drinks. Since temps will be in the 90º range, I wanted to come up with something that was refreshing, and lighter than the typical bourbon cocktail. I find that drinking bourbon sitting in the hot sun sounds slightly less optimal than say, drinking tequila in the hot sun. The solution to that? Combine bourbon with ingredients that brighten it up and make it as refreshing as ice cold lemonade on a hot day.
The Beachy Bourbon
makes 1 cocktail
1.5 ounces bourbon
1/2 ounce campari
3/4 ounce lime juice
about 2 ounces ginger beer
lime wedge for garnish
- In a cocktail shaker, combine the bourbon, lime juice, campari and a handful of ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
- Strain into an ice filled highball or large rocks glass. Top off with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wedge.
